Natural products for natural aquarium water care

Natural products for aquarium water care come from Mother Nature and are used for the natural care of aquarium water in order to influence and optimise it in a natural way so that a healthy environment is created as an optimal habitat for the inhabitants in the aquarium.

Depending on the natural product used, they fulfil other functions in addition to natural water treatment for aquariums, such as lowering the pH value or supporting health. They also provide a natural aquarium decoration with protection and hiding places which, depending on the natural product, are also used as additional natural food by certain aquarium inhabitants.

Alder cones and sea almond tree leaves are probably the best-known natural products for aquariums as natural water conditioners.

Alder cones - Use & effect

Alder cones have been a proven natural water conditioner for aquariums for many years and come from the black alder (Alnus glutinosa), which enrich the aquarium water with valuable humic acid, which leads to acidification of the water and thus lowers the pH value.

The average size of the alder cones is between 1 - 2 cm, whereby the latter can already be described as large alder cones. It should be noted that large alder cones consequently release a higher quantity of humic substances than smaller alder cones.

The cones also contain a high concentration of tannins, which leads to a significant reduction in the bacterial density in the open water.

In addition to water treatment, alder cones also have decorative properties and give the aquarium a natural look.

They also offer health benefits for the aquarium inhabitants. They contain various ingredients such as humic acid, flavonoids/tannins, alnulin, emodin, resin acids, lynoside, phlobaphene, protalnulin and triterpenes. These ingredients can have a preventative and supportive effect in the case of fungal infections / spawn fungus, bacterial infections (e.g. fin rot), fungal infections or wounds.

It is even claimed that alder cones make it easier for shrimps to moult.

Alder cones - Dosage

As alder cones are a natural product, a cautious approach is recommended when dosing alder cones, as not all alder cones are the same size and, as a natural product, do not all contain the same concentrations of ingredients, in addition to the fact that the initial values of the aquarium water, the aquarium stock and the size of the aquarium vary from aquarium to aquarium. In any case, special attention should be paid to the pH value of the water.

Ground alder cones in a bag

If you don't like the look of alder cones or they don't fit in with the overall look of your aquarium concept, but you would still like to benefit from the advantages of using alder cones, you can find alder cones in a small, practical bag for invisible use in the aquarium filter in our aquarium shop in addition to alder cones as a natural product. After use, you can simply and conveniently dispose of the bags in the compost.

Sea almond tree leaves - Use & effect

Sea almond tree leaves are also a tried and tested water conditioner for the aquarium and come from the so-called catappa tree (Terminalia catappa), which is also known as the sea almond tree, Indian almond or badam. The sea almond tree leaves are also often referred to as catappa leaves.

The dried sea almond tree leaves have a variety of applications in aquaristics and are used both for water treatment and as decoration in the aquarium, offering various animals protection and hiding places. They also serve as a natural source of food for shrimps, snails, crabs and crayfish in particular and are used both preventively and to treat diseases in the aquarium.

The leaves contain special substances such as valuable humic acids, flavonoids / tannins, tannins and saponins / triterpinoids, which are released into the water over a longer period of time, giving the sea almond leaves astringent, antibiotic, antifungal, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This makes catappa leaves suitable for the prevention and treatment of fungal infections, bacterial infections (e.g. fin rot), spawn fungus, ectoparasites, mucous membrane damage or wounds.

Furthermore, the use of sea almond tree leaves in the aquarium generally promotes the willingness to spawn and even supports foam nest building in fighting fish.

The pH value of the water is reduced slightly, while the total salt content is increased slightly. Over time, the water takes on a pretty amber colour, but of course remains clear, depending on the dosage of leaves.

Overall, sea almond tree products increase the well-being and vitality of the aquarium inhabitants in a natural way. The leaves can remain in the water until only a skeleton of leaves remains and can then be easily and conveniently disposed of in the compost without generating waste.

Sea almond leaves - Dosage
