Buying an axolotl - What you should look out for when buying an axolotl

Axolotls are known for their ability to regenerate and this is one of the reasons why these animals fascinate many aquarists. However, if you would like to keep axolotls as pets, there are a few things to bear in mind

Axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanum) are neotenous salamanders that live in water and originate from Mexico. Unlike most amphibians, which undergo a metamorphosis to live on land as adults, axolotls spend their entire lives in water. They are known for their extraordinary ability to regrow lost body parts, including limbs and even parts of their heart and brain. These animals once again illustrate what Mother Nature is capable of.

Buying an axolotl - The axolotl aquarium

Once you have informed yourself in detail about keeping axolotls, it's time to plan the axolotl aquarium. In order to determine the right size of aquarium, it is important that you know in advance how many axolotls you would like to keep.

An aquarium measuring 80 x 40 cm is often recommended for two axolotls. However, we personally recommend choosing an aquarium measuring at least 100 x 40 cm. It is important to note that axolotls can grow to between 23 and 30 cm and need the corresponding space.

For a larger group of approx. 5 animals, we recommend an aquarium of at least 150 x 50 cm.

When choosing an aquarium, you should also consider decorations such as plants, stones, roots and caves, which also require space in the aquarium.

Buying an axolotl - setting up the axolotl aquarium

When setting up your axolotl aquarium, you should make sure that you choose fine sand as the substrate. This will prevent the axolotl from accidentally swallowing stones while eating. This is because swallowing stones can lead to intestinal obstruction in axolotls.

Also avoid sharp and pointed furnishings, as the axolotl's skin is very sensitive and serious injuries can otherwise occur.

Use decorations such as plants, roots and caves to create hiding places and shaded areas. Axolotls appreciate places where they can hide and plants help to oxygenate the water.

Gentle but effective filtration is also necessary to keep the water clean and free of pollutants. A filter with an adjustable flow rate is ideal, as strong currents should be avoided. Keep the water temperature between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius to ensure ideal conditions for your axolotl. Higher temperatures can cause stress and health problems.

The quality of the water is crucial for the health of your axolotl. Regular water changes (about 30% of the volume per week) and testing the water for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are essential. If necessary, use water conditioners to remove chlorine and heavy metals from the tap water.
