Products for aquarium water care

Aquarium water care is a fundamental component of every aquarium and determines the health and well-being of the aquarium inhabitants, including aquarium plants.

For you as an aquarist, it is important to achieve the optimum water values so that a healthy environment can be created as an optimum habitat for the inhabitants in the aquarium. The exact water values depend on the fish population in the aquarium and their needs.

Water care products are used to achieve the optimum values by influencing and optimising the water. It is therefore important to know the water values in the aquarium and to check them regularly with the help of so-called water tests in order to be able to take appropriate measures to optimise the water quality if necessary, because not all water is the same.

Water tests

The most important water values to consider in freshwater aquariums are temperature, conductivity, carbonate hardness (KH / °dKH), acidity (pH) and total hardness (GH / °dGH) as well as nitrate (NO3), phosphate (PO4), silicate (SiO2), iron (Fe), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), carbon dioxide (CO2) and oxygen (O2).

There are a number of different measuring methods for measuring and analysing water values. In addition to the analogue thermometer, there are also digital thermometers for measuring the temperature. There are also a variety of different digital water measuring devices for measuring conductivity or pH value, as well as so-called test strips and droplet tests.

The best-known method is probably the test strip method. The test strip is held briefly in the aquarium and after a very short time the measuring points turn colour so that you only have to read off the values. This method of measuring the water values gives you as an aquarist a good overview of the water values present in the aquarium.

For an even more precise measurement of the water values, the use of so-called droplet tests is recommended. Here, each individual water value can be measured precisely by taking a water sample from the aquarium and mixing it with certain reagents. The value of the sample liquid is then checked with the help of colour charts and countermeasures can be taken with appropriate water care products.

Water conditioner

Water conditioners improve the water quality in the aquarium and are regularly used to neutralise various substances in the water such as chlorine and chloramine or heavy metals such as lead, copper or zinc. Ammonia and nitrite can also be reduced by some water conditioners to provide short-term relief. There are also water conditioners that can promote the formation of mucous membranes so that the fish are better protected against pathogens and other harmful influences.

As there are many different water conditioners available, the manufacturer's instructions on dosage must be observed and adapted to the circumstances of the aquarium.

In any case, water conditioners are no substitute for regular water changes and good aquarium care.

Vitamins & trace elements

In order to achieve a good balance of nutrients in the aquarium, certain vitamins and trace elements are particularly important for the health of aquarium plants and animals in the aquarium.

Vitamin C strengthens the immune system in fish, as it does in humans, and makes them more resistant to disease. It also helps to reduce stress. Vitamin B complexes, which contain various B vitamins such as B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B6 (pyridoxine) and B12 (cobalamin), are also important in terms of metabolism and energy production.

The trace element iron is particularly important for the growth of aquarium plants, whereas the trace element potassium plays a central role in regulating cell growth and photosynthesis. Both trace elements prevent deficiency symptoms in aquarium plants such as yellowish or pale leaves.

In addition to the trace elements iron and potassium, zinc, manganese, copper and molybdenum are other trace elements that ensure healthy and vigorous plant growth in the aquarium. These substances are often used in fertilisers for aquarium plants so that the aquarium plants receive all the necessary nutrients.

Natural products

Mother Nature has a number of products to offer to improve the water quality in the aquarium. These include the well-known and proven alder cones and sea almond tree leaves as well as peat as a natural material or zeolite as a naturally occurring mineral.

The use of natural water care products has many valuable benefits for the water quality and thus for the aquarium animals.

Always check the effects of natural products on your aquarium water regularly, as not all natural products are equally suitable for every aquarium and its stocking.
