Biological filter media

The main task of the biological filter material is to provide the best colonization conditions for bacterial cultures, so that a bacterial lawn develops after a short time. The bacteria feed on dirt particles of all kinds and convert substances that are critical for the aquarium.

After the initial cleaning by mechanical filter media (e.g. EHEIM MECH or MECHpro), biological filtration is the most important step. It ensures clear, healthy water and stable water values. That is why we have invested a lot of research work in the development of biological filter media.

Natural lava rock for biological filtration

EHEIM LAV is made of lava rock and is a purely natural product. The rough, highly porous structure offers the cleaning bacteria very good colonization conditions. As it is a natural material, the granules and fragments in the packaging vary in size.
EHEIM LAV can be washed out and reused. It is suitable for fresh and salt water.
