The main task of the biological filter material is to provide the best colonization conditions for bacterial cultures, so that a bacterial lawn develops after a short time. The bacteria feed on dirt particles of all kinds and convert substances that are critical for the aquarium.
After the initial cleaning by mechanical filter media (e.g. EHEIM MECH or MECHpro), biological filtration is the most important step. It ensures clear, healthy water and stable water values. That is why we have invested a lot of research work in the development of biological filter media.
EHEIM SUBSTRATpro
Optimized biological filter media with perfect volume utilization, long service life and maximum decomposition performance
SUBSTRATpro consists of spherically sintered quartz. The spherical shape allows a high bulk density. This means that the volume in the filter (filter baskets or modules) can be fully utilized. In addition, the optimized surface of the beads ensures intensive colonization of the important cleaning bacteria. A dense bacterial lawn is formed.
Due to the high number of bacteria, nitrite load peaks are also better reduced and the service life of the filter material is extended.
EHEIM SUBSTRATpro is suitable for fresh and salt water, is washable and can be used several times.
Optimized bio-filter medium made from sintered quartz
High bulk density due to spherical shape (beads)
Very dense bacterial colonization
Longer service life
Better degradation in case of nitrite contamination
Can be used several times (rinse carefully for cleaning)
Suitable for fresh and salt water
Tip
Never clean or replace the entire biological filter material in one operation (and never too thoroughly). The bacterial cultures must not be completely destroyed, otherwise recolonization will be delayed. The filter baskets in external filters and the filter modules in the aquaball and biopower internal filters are ideal for partial cleaning.
