Depending on the type, chemical filter media influence the pH value and water hardness (peat) - or reduce the phosphate content and inhibit algae growth (phosphateout).
The pH value of tap water is usually 7.3 - 7.8, i.e. slightly alkaline. However, most ornamental fish require more acidic water - i.e. a pH value below 7.0. EHEIM TORFpellets lower the pH value and reduce the water hardness.
Phosphates are mainly caused by organic contamination of the aquarium water (food residues, excrement etc.) and are responsible for algae growth. EHEIM phosphateout binds the phosphate and removes it from the water cycle.
EHEIM phosphateout is a special iron compound for chemical filtering. The iron binds the phosphate, removes it from the water cycle and thus gradually reduces the phosphate content in the aquarium. This inhibits algae growth in particular.
When the phosphate content and thus the algae growth increases again, the filter medium is exhausted and must be replaced.
EHEIM phosphateout is available as granules for external filters and as a foam cartridge for internal filters. It is free from harmful substances and is suitable for fresh and salt water.
